Student painters and sculptors who are chosen to receive these awards will have submitted examples of their works which clearly reflect the principles espoused by the classical methods of drawing, painting and sculpture; centering on the importance of the techniques developed and evolved from the Renaissance through the late 19th century. Student works should reflect a level of visual literacy that demonstrates their potential for interpreting humanist values that will ultimately provide them with the tools and creative inspiration necessary to produce works of universal relevance. We are proud to be recognized for the third year in a row by the Morris and Alma Schapiro Fund (Learn More about the Morris and Alma Schapiro Fund) which has once again graced us with a $15,000 grant to support this year's scholarship contest. ARC will match the grant bringing the total to $30,000 in ARC Scholarships available for 2011. From the contest participants we will select 6 artists to receive $2,500 scholarships and 5 will be selected to receive $1,000 each for a total of $20,000 in support for promising young artists. In addition, we have decided that $5,000 of the Morris and Alma Schapiro Fund grant and $5,000 from ARC will be designated to young art students who show great potential but who may not have as yet had any of the advantages of academic training. Their work cannot compete with even second year atelier students, but their potential can be assesssed and they should have the opportunity to receive grants on an entry level. This will insure that $10,000 in grant monies will go to young talented students such as seniors in high school or young adults in their twenties who are disillusioned with the present established art training system and want to transfer to an ARC Approved™ School or Atelier.
No entry fees will be required.
In addition, we recognize the need to support talented students dedicated to the realist tradition; those slated to carry the torch of creative realism into the 21st century. For the present, we must direct our focus on our primary goal; that of building this incredible educational tool -- the ARC Museum, which is fast becoming a valuable resource for art students, scholars, researchers, curators, collectors and art lovers alike. The ARC is a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit educational organization. ARC services, therefore, are free to the public. Our beneficiaries will be art educators and historians; future generations of artists, and those enriched by art. In the long run, our greatest beneficiary will be society as a whole. If you know of any struggling, hard working and truly talented students, please pass the word. Help us to support our aspiring artists by informing faculty and administrators at qualifying institutions. Through the ARC scholarship fund competition, we intend to work to ensure that this valuable resource will endure. The ARC seeks examples of paintings and sculpture rendered from life and representative of nature as reflected in figurative studies and compositions, landscapes, still lives, and portraits -- work that that seeks to capture a fully recognizable likeness of the model. Compositions rendered with the aid of projectors or copied from photographs do not represent the mission and goals of the competition. However, incorporation of impressionist techniques is acceptable, as long as such techniques reinforce the subject, or theme. No entry fees are required. The competition will be judged exclusively on the basis of merit.
ARC reserves the right to disburse funds in whole or in part after evaluation of the merits of applicant entries as exhibited by their work and proof of enrollment at an atelier, academy, studio-school or program approved by ARC. Please check with Kara Ross, the Director of Operations, to determine if the program or apprenticeship in which you are currently enrolled, or wish to enroll, qualifies for this competition. The decision of the Judges shall be final. ARC reserves the right of sole discretion to withhold awards if, in its judgment, the work submitted fails to comply with the standards as noted herein. Awardees must use scholarship funds to further his/her art education, i.e. tuition and art materials. Scholarship funds must be used at ARC Approved™ institutions who teach proper methods of training. In all cases, funds will be paid directly to the studio or institutions where the winners will be working. ARC reserves the right to make recommendations regarding the disbursement of funds, or to request that the use of scholarship funds be monitored by a representative of the faculty or staff of the institution where the student is enrolled. Scholarship winners must claim their award within one year of the time it is awarded. This is done by enrolling in the ARC Approved™ course(s) he/she desires and having the bill sent from the school on his/her behalf to The Art Renewal Center as proof of enrollment. ARC will then pay the bill on the student's behalf up to the sum of the award amount. This competition is not open to students inspired by abstract, conceptualist, neo-conceptual or non-traditional forms of constructions. Also excluded are examples of commercial design arts such as fashion and interior design, crafts, architecture, collage, photography, computer graphics and animation, commercial illustration or related genres. It is the determination of the Board of Trustees that illustration clearly can rise to the level of fine art; therefore example illustrative works will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Incomplete applications will not be submitted to the judges for evaluation. Announcement of the awards will be made by mail as soon as a decision has been made. The names of winners will be announced on the ARC Website. Suggested Entries: Portraits rendered from life, landscapes, still lifes, paintings from life, drawings or paintings from the figure (nude), cast studies in charcoal or grisaille palette, or completed thematic works.
However, we recognize that students may not have access to computers, digital cameras, scanners or scanning services. In such cases, students may submit entries in the form of hard copy along with slides, transparencies or high quality photographs. Mail to:

Therefore, students who wish to apply are asked to send not less than 5 and not more than 10 images in a JPEG or TIFF format of their best work (see above for special considerations). One recommendation must be from a current art instructor; preferably the Master painter or sculptor with whom you are currently studying, or under whom you will be studying during the 2011/2011 academic year. If the ARC is not familiar with an instructor or educational institution, a letter of personal introduction accompanied by a school brochure (if available), a biography and images of the instructor's work will be requested before a final decision is rendered. Biography or CV Students must include a biography or CV, including information regarding your education to date, a list of any honors and awards received, and/or exhibitions in which you have participated. Also, please include any instructional experience and a list of additional references if possible. Bios should be sent via email or as an attached file.
